Michael Barton, Director

Michael S. Barton was appointed Director of Emergency Management for Calhoun County, Alabama on November 15, 2018.  He also serves as the County’s Homeland Security Coordinator.  In these roles, he proudly leads an experienced team of emergency managers and public safety professionals in countywide coordination and engages regional cooperation among all levels of government, public safety responders, and non-profit organizations for all-hazards readiness, response, and recovery. 


Director Barton has served the public since December 2000.  He has worked in law enforcement, fire service, emergency medical service, and non-profit organizations.  He has been a member of the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force and was appointed Special Deputy United States Marshal in the Northern District of Alabama.  Throughout his career, Director Barton has led the public safety organizations that he served.  He has risen through the ranks serving as Assistant Chief Deputy Sheriff, Fire Chief, Chief Deputy Sheriff, and Chairman of a County 911 Communications District.  

Director Barton's education includes an Associate Degree from Gadsden State Community College, a Bachelor Degree in Emergency Management from Jacksonville State University, and a Certificate in Graduate Studies in Criminal Justice Leadership from the University of Virginia.  He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, the Homeland Security Leadership Academy, and the Alabama County Government Education Institute.  He has earned a number of additional certifications through the Alabama Fire College Personnel and Standards Commission and the Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission.  He is a graduate of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Basic Training Academy and remains an active certified law enforcement officer in the State of Alabama.  He is a Certified Homeland Protection Professional.  As a youth, Barton earned the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America. 


Most importantly, Michael Barton enjoys spending adventurous time with his family.  Since 2005, he has been married to his high school sweetheart Natalie Geer Barton.  Together, they are the proud parents of son, Sheppard and daughter, Faith.  Daily, Michael strives to make a positive difference in the lives of others.
