Free Youth Preparedness Camp
October 14, 2011

Youth Preparedness Camp is a unique program that promotes citizen preparedness and participation to school aged children. Campers will learn about a wide variety of emergency preparedness techniques and topics through hands-on lessons and traditional classroom instruction. Some of the topics covered during the camp include, emergency preparedness, introduction to first aid, fire safety, light search and rescue, and disaster psychology.  The highlight of the Camp is the mock disaster exercise that allows the campers to put in to practice the skills they learned during the week. The core of focus of Youth Preparedness Camp is providing children with the tools necessary to help their family and community be better prepared for a disaster.

Youth Preparedness Camp is FREE to participants and it is the responsibility of the participant’s parent/guardian to provide transportation to and from Jacksonville, AL

All Calhoun County residents who will be between the ages of 8 to 19 by October 2011 are eligible to attend Youth Preparedness Camp. A legal waiver must be signed by a parent/guardian of every child attending the camp.

Youth Preparedness Camp will be October 10th – October 15th from 10:00 am till 2:00 pm each day at the Jacksonville City Community Center located at 501 Alexandria Road, Jacksonville, AL 36265. Lunch will be provided each day.

Registration forms are available at Jacksonville State University Police Department located at 500 Forney Ave SW Jacksonville, Alabama 36265.
Registration will be open to the first 40 campers that apply. The last day to register will be September 30th, 2011. If you have questions about the camp please contact Ms. Melonie Carmichael at (256) 782-5282 or mcarmich@jsu.edu.

Free National Weather Service Storm Spotter Class
October 13, 2011

Forecasters from the National Weather Service Birmingham will be conducting this free class from 6-8 PM at the JSU library. The training sessions cover:

    Basics of thunderstorm development
    Fundamentals of storm structure
    Identifying potential severe weather features
    Information to report
    How to report information
    Basic severe weather safety
